A year ago this week our family went on a grand adventure to New Zealand. Being the Tolkien super-fans that we are, we made pilgrimage to The Shire. Yes, it's actually a real place with Hobbit holes, rolling green hills..and pints! A beautifully kept movie set from the Peter Jackson films, and for those who wish to be Hobbits it's a must see. I want to be a Hobbit. No.. I want to be a Lothlorien Elf. Wait.. maybe a Rivendell Elf. Sorry.. a Numinor.
My teenage anthem, Ramble On, came on the radio today and my 13 year old son said, "this song is about Frodo, mom." I knew Mordor and Gollum were in the lyrics, but I had never given it too much thought or researched it. (And I call myself a fan). Turns out that many Led Zeppelin songs have Tolkien lore woven into them, and after decades of belting out these old tunes I didn't know, even though the music had always been like a portal to a Middle Earth-esque mindscape. Dark and mystical. Odd creatures creeping. Nature at its wildest. Men with guitars and boyish mentalities on LSD can be a very good thing.
Perhaps part of the reason I'm so fond of The Lord of The Rings is because of a Tolkien consciousness that was first tapped by Led Zeppelin long ago.. combined with my own boyish tendencies. Sword fights, Horse lords , Elves, Orcs, Wizards, and Misty Mountains FOREVER!
